La Boca, Buenos Aires.
A visit to La Boca, a neighbourhood of the city of Buenos Aires and home of the Tango and Boca Juniors football club. February 2007.

I was in Buenos Aires in February 2007, en route to the Port of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego; with the purpose of visiting the Antarctic. I spent 3 days in Buenos Aires, and met up with the rest of my marathon running group, who'd be travelling to the Antarctic with me. I stayed with approx 200 other people in a really nice part of the city in the Marriott Plaza hotel, a nineteenth century european style building. I toured the city on my second day as part of an organised half day tour, and we had approx 45minutes in the neighbourhood of La Boca, most famous for the football team, Boca Juniors.

The short tour had convinced me that this part of the city was a hotbed for photography, and that I had to come back and visit again. The following day, a fellow marathon runner, and friend I made, Tee Kamoshita from Oregon, USA (pictured) came with me to see the neighbourhood. We spent a good couple of hours wandering round, and Tee shopped for souvenirs for her children. I was paranoid about being mugged and having all my camera equipment stolen before I made it to the Antarctic. The neighbourhood seemed safe enough during the day, and policemen stood post on almost every street corner. Apparently it's not safe after 6pm though, and all tourists should leave by then. The stadium is just a few hundreds metre's away, but I didn't manage a good shot of it, just a blurred concrete side wall from the tour bus.

I used both my digital SLR and two types of film, Fuji Velvia, which is heavily saturated and gives some of the deep rich colours above. I also used standard kodak 100 gold film, which I am less happy with as a medium, and am hooked on positive slide film now. After La Boca, we made our way back to the city centre via the warehouse district for lunch. For western tourists, the local currency offers an amazing exchange rate. I converted my British Pounds to US Dollars at a rate of £1 - $1.92 in England, then converted my USD to local Peso's at nearly $1USD - $3ARG Peso. This meant that I was getting $5.75 Peso's to the £1, which made lunch very cheap for us. It was a good day, and the sweltering 26°c heat of the afternoon and high humidity made us retreat to the air conditioned hotel after lunch.
