Shepard Fairey, Nineteeneightyfouria.
Photography during my lunch hour; an exhibition of artwork by Shepard Fairey in East London's Brick Lane. November 2007.
<87 Brick Lane, Stolenspace gallery>
On Monday lunchtime, my mate Gary at work suggested that we head to Brick Lane to see a gallery exhibiting Shepard Fairey's artwork. Gary knew quite a bit about the artist and apparently he's done a couple of album covers, and Gary's brother sells t-shirts in his shop with Fairey's artwork.

It took about 10 minutes for us to walk over there, through Spittlefields market. The gallery was a nondescript door leading upstairs near the Truman brewery. We walked into the exhibition (which was free) and were immediately impressed by the expansive warehouse space. I would describe the art, as a collage of newspaper painted over with anti establishment, anti US government material. It was exceptionally creative and most absorbing. There were also litho prints on aluminium, and canvas and paper prints. The detail was very impressive, I noticed in particular bombs printed all around mock bank notes, and police world cup trophy's behind other artwork.

All pieces of work which we saw were sold, apparently there were three left, two of which were the base £3,000, the other was a large piece costing £30,000. I really enjoyed the exhibit and we spent a good 20 minutes wandering around it; it was a superb way to spend lunch and we were chuffed that we'd been to see it. I asked at the front desk if they'd let me use my camera in the gallery if I came back; they obligingly said yes, so we returned the next day with Aaron, another mate from work.

The gallery is open until November 25th, and hopefully my pictures will encourage others to visit, they're not clever, just trying to capture the scene.
